Start with the car as it sits today
Before you arrange disposal, stand at the car and look at it as a collector would. Is it parked nose-in on a tight Knutsford drive, tucked in a garage, or sitting on private land with room only for a winch or barrow? That first picture matters because it tells you what kind of recovery is realistic.
A car that still rolls freely is easier to move than one with seized brakes or a flat tyre at each corner. A locked steering wheel, dead battery or missing key can change the plan as well. None of that means the vehicle cannot go, but it does mean the collection needs to match the condition.
Check the paperwork before you call it finished
Paperwork is easy to ignore when a car has been standing for months. Still, the V5C, any finance letters and your own record of the vehicle should be near the top of the list. If the logbook is present, keep it ready. If it is missing, make a note now rather than discovering it on collection day.
It also helps to think about what you still need from the car. If the number plate is personal, deal with that before the vehicle leaves. If the car is already off the road and you plan to keep it there for a while, you may need a separate tax or SORN decision. Sorting those points early keeps the disposal process tidy.
Note anything that changes the collection
The details that seem small at first are often the ones that hold things up. A car at the back of a terraced property, behind a side gate or down a shared lane may need more time to reach than one parked by a wide curb. If the vehicle is in a locked yard, say so.
The same goes for parts and condition. Missing wheels, a removed catalytic converter, broken glass, heavy body damage or a car that is partly stripped can affect how the vehicle is handled. If the car has no battery, say that plainly. If it starts but will not drive, say that too. Clear facts are more useful than hopeful guesses.
Empty the car properly
Go through the cabin, boot, door pockets and glovebox before you hand the car over. Remove tools, chargers, shopping bags, child seats, garage receipts, insurance letters and anything else you would miss later. A vehicle that has been used for family runs often hides useful things in plain sight.
Check under seats and in the spare-wheel well. People often forget parking permits, sunglasses, sat-nav mounts and small personal items there. Once the car has gone, recovery becomes awkward and sometimes impossible. A five-minute search now is easier than a day spent trying to trace a misplaced folder or spare key.
Decide what kind of disposal makes sense
Once you know the paperwork, access and condition, the choice becomes simpler. If the car is complete and easy to move, disposal is usually straightforward. If it has missing parts, damaged wheels or awkward access, you may need to be more careful about how and when it is collected.
That is the point of the first check: not to overthink every detail, but to remove surprises. A car with clear notes and a tidy handover is easier to move on than one that has been left half-remembered on a drive.
